Overall Experience / Vibe
HCM gives all of their customers a great experience upon arrival. I find that they always have multiple staff members at the front desk, which is very helpful! The staff at HCM are friendly, knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you might have during your time at the gym. HCM members are also very friendly! I have found members of this gym to be very helpful to beginners and kids alike. If you are experienced in rock climbing, you will have lots of fun climbing along side HCM’s strong members!
The aesthetics of the gym are very kid-friendly. For example, the gym is very colourful, very clean, they have big holds, and most of the wall angles are vertical. Their design approach makes HCM perfect for hosting birthday parties, and groups. If you are experienced in rock climbing, I recommend hitting the gym at their least popular times, to avoid the kids and/or groups. You can find out their most popular times by searching up “Hub Climbing Markham” on Google. I have had great overall experiences at this gym, and I think you will too!
Quality of Routes
Due to the sheer size of the bouldering area, there are multiple different wall angles to climb on! Most of the gym is composed of vert and slab walls, but overhangs are still present. HCM’s abundance of vertical and slab wall angles make it a great place to practice those types of style. Not many gyms offer this much slab climbing! There is also a large overhang section, composed of challenging and interesting boulders. HCM also offers an archway, allowing space for longer boulders.
HCM offers a large variety of hold types: crimps, slopers, large features, punches, pockets, jugs and anything else you can think of! The setters do a great job of using these hold types on all of their walls, ensuring a healthy diversity of climbing styles around the gym. I enjoy the variety of boulder problems around the gym because they give you the opportunity to practice many aspects of rock climbing.
Noteworthy about HCM’s facility, is the dragon! The dragon is a 23 foot high overhang, that is set up over a large foam pit. This wall is extremely fun to climb on, and it is safe. The dragon is a lot of fun for kids, teenagers and adults alike. The routes on the dragon are not usually difficult, but you’re welcome to make up your own boulders and see how you fare!
Programs @ Hub Climbing Markham
HCM offers a wide range of programs, geared towards climbers of all ages. Yoga classes are available for members and non-members. Yoga for climbers is very helpful in training mobility and balance, which can improve you climbing skills. Kids and youth climbers can get involved in the youth recreational team or the youth development team. The youth recreational team is a very fun way to get introduced to climbing. The youth development team is geared towards climbers more serious about improving. HCM also hosts birthday parties for children. All of the staff at HCM are very friendly, so if you have any questions about their programs, give them a call or check out their website.
